Our Pre-Prep Department cares and educates your children from the age of three to five. The first few years of your child’s education are essential for their future as he or she moves into more formal schooling and then adult life beyond. It is vital therefore to get those first few years right.
Both our Nursery and Reception classes follow the British Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS), which is based upon the seven areas of Learning and Development and includes communication and language, personal, social, emotional and physical development. Almost all of our activities are based on structured play and exploring, which allow the children to develop their essential skills in areas of literacy, mathematics and expressive arts.
We believe that children learn through experiences and that it is our job to provide them with those learning opportunities every day they come to school. Our imaginative role play topics are changed regularly and encompass all areas of learning. Maths is best learnt in our role play ‘Post Office’, sorting parcels by size and weight, whilst our French café is beneficial for developing basic, foreign language skills.
Languages are taught from Nursery onwards by specialist teachers with a gentle and fun introduction to Arabic (for our non-Arabic speaking children) and French. Our Arabic and Muslim pupils are taught according to the Ministry of Education curriculum.
All children receive specialist tuition for music and sport. Teaching Assistants support the class teachers and the ratio in our Pre-Prep is never more than 1:10.
Our language of instruction is English and all of our class teachers are British qualified and highly trained. Teaching Assistants support the class teachers in all Pre-Prep classrooms.
Our Pre-Prep Department consists of a series of bright, colourful, self-contained classrooms centered around a large library and indoor play space. Each classroom is fully equipped with quality learning materials, all of which have come from the UK. The Pre-Prep classrooms have direct access to their own tree-lined, secure shaded playground with superb outdoor play equipment.
Part of the whole school
Our Pre-Prep children are very much part of the whole school. They join in as much as possible by coming to Achievers Assemblies and being awarded certificates and having lunch in the dining room. The younger children really look up to the older children and are encouraged to work together at every opportunity, so they can learn together.
Developing the whole child
RGSGQ children are encouraged to develop good social skills and to have respect for others. They are taught good manners and the difference between right and wrong.
In line with our school values and the development of our pupils’ learning habits, our youngest children are also taught how to learn by being encouraged to explore and think for themselves.
School trips linked to classroom topics and activities, along with extra-curricular opportunities are an important part of our EYFS curriculum.
A lasting memento
At The RGS Guildford in Qatar we record those special moments of your child in our online Tapestry Learning Journal, which allows us to capture and share your children’s progress with you, as well as monitor their development and learning. Videos, photos and samples of your child’s work will be regularly uploaded for you to view. You can also add your own observations which help your child’s teacher to personalise your child’s education and create a lasting memento of their early learning experiences.
Safe and Secure All Day Long
All the children in our Pre-Prep classes are able to start early, from 7.15 am in the morning and stay later than the full school day until 3pm in our After-School Crèche club.
Admission to Pre-Prep
Admission to the School is competitive and all pupils undergo a detailed assessment before being accepted. Our younger children are assessed by observation within a classroom setting.
The assessments for our younger children are fun and play-based and the children don’t usually want to leave!
Whilst selective, the School is also inclusive and children are accepted based upon their ability to develop and thrive at the School.
The language of instruction is English and all children are required to have a good understanding of the English language in order that they are fully able to benefit from all aspects of the curriculum.

We are fortunate to enjoy fantastic music and sports facilities at The RGS Guildford in Qatar as well as plenty of large, open spaces in which to practice and perform. We have a dedicated Music Room, an Art Room, an impressive Sports Hall and a large, multi-functional sports pitch, along with five basketball courts. Whilst we are awaiting the installation of our own swimming pool, we are very close to Barzan Park, where our pupils are able to progress their swimming lessons.
The sound of music can be heard throughout the School and plays an important part in school life. All of our pupils receive specialist music tuition and we offer a range of practical and theoretical music lessons. There are opportunities to study various instruments and to join the school choir and bands.
From Nursery to Year Six our pupils enjoy creative art lessons and their handiwork can be seen adorning the school walls and noticeboards. Displaying and celebrating our pupils’ work is essential for building confidence and developing a sense of pride and competition.
In accordance with the Ministry of Education in Qatar, all Qatari pupils receive Arabic language lessons with a specialist Arabic teacher for up to three lessons a week. All other pupils can choose between Arabic or French language lessons. Islamic Studies is available to our Muslim pupils and all pupils are taught the History of Qatar from Year Three.
We can offer limited support to children who require a small helping hand with either their English language or subject skills.
English as an Additional Language
We provide support to pupils whose first language is not English. It is essential, however, that all children have a basic working knowledge of the English language prior to enrolment. There are a number of excellent English schools and tutors in Qatar that we are happy to recommend.
Special Education Needs
The RGS Guildford in Qatar adopts an inclusive policy and students with SEND are offered the opportunity to join the School if they satisfy the School’s selection criteria and we possess the facilities and expertise to meet their needs. However, due to the limitation of our facilities, we may not be able to cater for all needs. At the present time we do not employ extra staff to support children who require extra tuition or one-to-one support.
